I've seen it all in my days in furniture retail - furniture that won't fit through the door, that is too big for a room, uncomfortable, out of scale, wrong color, doesn't fit the sit, etc.... Prepare
Know What You Like
Know the Room Dimensions
Know Your Long Term Expectations SCALE - is the relationship between form, size, and how it fits into a space. It is also the most overlooked element in choosing furniture. 1) Draw a floor plan to scale if you don't have one. Measure and enter the arrangement into the plan. 2) Allow space for traffic. Main traffic ways need 3 feet of clearance. Minor traffic areas need 2 feet clearance. 3) Measure Doorways, hallways, stairs, all passageways. 4)Place your plan into a folder with fabric samples, paint chips, etc. 5) Take a tape measure, along with samples, all dimensions and floor plan when you go shopping. 6) Don't shop on Saturday - this busiest day may mean inadequate selection. 7) Shop with the people you will share the furniture with. 8) Limit the advice you ask of others - one or two trusted people, not all your friends. 9) Sales people are there to help you - let them - they are your best product resource. 10) MEASURE all pieces you are interested in - make sure they fit your plan. 11) SIT in the furniture - make sure it fits your sit! Is is comfortable to lie on? Does it fit your partner? 12) Don't buy on impulse. Revisit as many times as needed 13) Don't buy just something is on sale - it may turn out to be very costly!
